There’s nothing quite like good friends and good food. Now, members of one Stone County club are enjoying both from the comfort of their own homes through the Neighbors and Friends of Table Rock Lake’s Zoom Cooking Club.
Neighbors and Friends of Table Rock Lake is an organization that brings people together through a variety of interest groups, from hiking to crafting to gardening. However, due to COVID-19, many of the groups have been unable to meet in-person. That’s why Barb Hirsh decided it was time to start the organization’s newest interest group: The Zoom Cooking Club.
“I got the idea when I was watching the Pioneer Woman cooking show. Her kids were just filming the show with their phones. ‘Well, if they can do it, we can do it.’ So, that is how we started,” Hirsh said.
The Cooking Club currently has about 20 members who meet online twice per month. So far, tasty pies with homemade crusts, fresh sourdough bread, and even a unique German dish have been demonstrated. Participants can choose to take a turn showing off their cooking skills or simply watch and learn.
“We have some excellent cooks and we have some cooks who just want to improve. So, everyone is welcomed,” Hirsh said.
Hirsh said she and the co-chair of the group An-dee McCormack wanted to help facilitate an activity that would help fight the pandemic blues.
“People were at home and were bored. So, trying new recipes is fun and having something to do twice a month was a needed connection,” Hirsh said.
However, the Cooking Club won’t always be just virtual. With more members being vaccinated next month, the group plans to meet in-person for its first Chat with a Chef. The club will be meeting at The Branson Center Stage Kaufee Haus and the woman who supplies their muffins, Sarah Coday, is going to speak.
Hirsh said other interest groups within Neighbors and Friends of Table Rock Lake have started to meet again in-person already. The Adventure Group and Craft Group are meeting. The hiking group is starting back this month.
Hirsh joined Neighbors and Friends of Table Rock Lake when she moved to Kimberling City several years ago from Chicago and said the group provided a great opportunity to meet people and get to know the area, and join an organization that provides service to the community.
“It was a bonding with my neighbors,” Hirsh said. “People are from all over. It’s really amazing how many people retire or just move to the Kimberling City area.”
Neighbors and Friends of Table Rock Lake isn’t only a group that connects neighbors and helps form friendships, it also raises money for charitable organizations in the Table Rock Lake area. It hosts fundraising events including the Twilight Auction, the Christmas Tour of Homes, and The Villa Vista Concert Series.
