Working To Keep Students Fed During Quarantine
May 20, 2020
Food service workers and other staff load up a Galena R-II School District bus with the last regular food delivery to students before summer school starts next month. The school has distributed around 35,000 meals to students since March 23, when meal delivery service started. Each week, breakfast and lunch for each student for a week are loaded onto school buses, which deliver the meals to the students. Teachers volunteer to ride the buses and help distribute the food. "We wanted to do this," said Dr. Danny Humble, superintendent at the district. "The response has been great. We've had people chomping at the bit to help out. The teachers really wanted to see their kids. The emotions from teachers has been amazing to see," he said. Summer school at Galena is set to begin Tuesday, June 2.
