Changes are underway inside the former American Legion building on Main Street in Crane. Since the Stone County Historical and Genealogical Society purchased the building, members have been volunteering their time to revamp the space.

Two weekends ago workers spent the morning removing an old bar and breaking out walls. The building now features a large front room that could be used to host a variety of events. The Historic Society plans to host bingo nights and music events. It also plans to rent the space, for a small fee, to community members to use for showers, parties, or meetings.

However, the building still needs work. The Historic Society continues to seek volunteers to help with renovations and/or donate money and materials to make needed renovations to the building.

The first event, a music jam session will be held Friday, March 4, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more details see our Community Calendar on 2A.

The goal of the project is to give the community of Crane a place to gather, while helping to keep Crane’s Main Street alive.

Anyone who’d like to get involved can call 417-230-0800 or 417-239-7527 or email SCHGS2016@gmail.com.

The County Historical Museum and Genealogical Center is open on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The membership meeting is the second Saturday of the month at 2 p.m. You can learn more about the organization and find membership applications at the Stone County Historical Society website.
