Woman Charged For Shooting Man In Chest

A Lampe woman is being held without bond after she allegedly shot someone in the chest in mid-April. According to a press release from the Stone County Sheriff's Office, Darlene Smith, 64, was arrested May 5 for allegedly shooting a man in the chest April 19. The victim has since recovered.
According to the release, the sheriff's office received a call from an area hospital where they were treating the victim. The male victim was coherent when detectives spoke with him to begin the investigation. He was released from the hospital later that week.
According to the affidavit probable cause, used in filing charges against Smith, the victim initially told officers he had accidentally shot himself. However, a few weeks later, detectives reportedly received information that contradicted this story, saying Smith shot the victim.
On Tuesday, May 5, detectives with the Stone County Sheriff's Office arrested Darlene Smith, 64, of Lampe, in connection with this case. During an interview with Smith, she allegedly admitted to the officers to shooting the victim, exclaiming, "I shot him."
She was booked into the Stone County Jail on an investigative hold at approximately 3:22 p.m., according to the inmate roster website.
A probable cause statement was submitted to the Stone County Prosecutor's office and the following charges were filed against Smith. Darlene Smith is charged with the unclassified felony of armed criminal action and the Class A felony of assault in the first degree with serious physical injury.
Smith is being held in the Stone County Jail without bond at this time. A bond hearing was scheduled to occur on Tuesday, May 12. Results of that hearing are not available as of this writing.
