Village of McCord Bend To Cook Food For Residents

With the ever changing state of things, the Village of McCord Bend will be cooking residents a grab and go meal on Sundays until further notice. The village was set to have a cook-out celebrating the beginning of spoonbill season last weekend, but rain and the COVID-19 response lead to that event’s cancelation.
As a result, however, the village has a large number of hamburgers and hotdogs that need to be used. “When given lemons, we have decided to make some lemonade,” said Mandi Carr, Trustee Chairperson for the village. “With the number of people in our community that are not working due to self-isolation, we have decided the board of trustees will barbeque hotdogs, hamburgers and chili dogs that every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. until this imposed isolation ends or we run out of food.”
“This small gesture will provide one meal for anyone in McCord Bend, particularly children and elderly. We all are too aware of the fact that going to the grocery store is an adventure right now, and once there finding what you need is difficult as well. This will hopefully give a little break for our residents,” she said. “We do not want people congregating here and possibly exposing themselves to illness.”
Last week’s event was also set to help the community raise funds for a storm siren for the village. Donations will be accepted at the meal each weekend, but are not necessary. All funds donated will go toward purchasing the siren.
The total cost for purchasing and installing the storm siren is $15,500. The village has applied for a USDA grant to cover 75% of the costs, bringing the village’s portion down to $3,875.
