Two people from Springfield were arrested on Monday, April 16, in connection with alleged thefts that occurred at a resort and a residence in Indian Point. According to affidavits of probable cause, Shanda Rogers, 24, of Springfield, and James Hensley, 39, of Springfield, took keys from a maintenance worker’s vehicle and also took items from a residence in the village.
According to the probable cause statements by Chief Hamlin of the Indian Point Police Department, Hamlin spoke to a victim who works for the Hunter’s Friend resort.
According to the victim, he had a bucket of keys in his truck. These keys belong to the resort, which also manages a number of rental properties in the area. The victim noticed the bucket was missing after returning to the truck.
While Hamlin was taking the victim’s statement, he received a call about a burglary in progress at the north end of the village. Once Hamlin arrived at the location, he allegedly saw Rogers and Hensley attempting to get into a vehicle on the property. The vehicle was allegedly reported stolen out of Greene County.
Hamlin was reportedly unable to verify if anything was stolen out of the property, but did note that underpinning had been removed from the front side.
Rogers and Hensley were placed under arrest. After being read his Miranda warning, Hensley allegedly told Chief Hamlin that he had a syringe and methamphetamine on his person. He also allegedly admitted that he and Rogers were at the first location. Hensley reportedly said that Rogers was the one who took the keys from the truck.
Inside of the vehicle, Hamlin reports he found multiple glass pipes with a burnt residue like that of marijuana. A wallet that was reported stolen from Springfield was also found in the vehicle, along with a pouch containing, among other things, a digital scale and a blank check from a business in Mt. Vernon. Also in the vehicle was a trailer registration, including license plate tab, belonging to an individual from Galena.
James L. Hensley is being held in the Stone County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash-only bond as of press-time Tuesday afternoon. He is charged with possession of a controlled substance and stealing of $750 or more.
After the interview with Hensley, Chief Hamlin reportedly spoke with Shanda Rogers after reading her Miranda warning.
Rogers also allegedly admitted to being at the first address Hamlin responded to, but claimed a third individual who was with them is who took the keys from the truck. She allegedly stated that she and Hensley had dropped this third party off in Forsyth earlier that same day.
Shanda M. Rogers was taken to the Stone County Jail, initially in lieu of $25,000 cash-only bond. However, after a hearing on Tuesday, April 24, her bond was reduced to $5,000 cash or surety. She was still being held in the Jail at press-time on Tuesday.
Rogers is charged with felony stealing of over $750.
