Tornado Confirmed In Stone County During April 30 Storm System

The National Weather Service in Springfield has confirmed a tornado touched down in Stone County during the April 30 storm system. The EF-1 tornado was on the ground for over 20 miles. 


The preliminary damage results, released Monday, May 6, indicate 28 tornados touched down in southwest Missouri during the storm system. 


The Stone County twister touched down about three miles south of Elsey and passed just north of Galena before traveling into Christian County. 


The weather service initially stated the tornado touched down north of Galena, but further survey has confirmed the storm actually hit five miles further west. 


The tornado was about 100 yards (300 feet) wide at its max. Top winds are estimated at 95 mph. The tornado was on the ground for 23.35 miles, lifting off about six miles south of Chadwick in Christian County. 


No injuries were reported, but one home was damaged by a falling tree. Additionally, three outbuildings were destroyed or damaged, one truck rolled and several trees were uprooted or snapped.
