Tarwater Held in Connection with Shooting in Hurley

February 8, 2018
Isaac Estes-Jones

Justin C. Tarwater is in the Stone County Jail after reportedly shooting a gun out of the window of a car.
Tarwater, whose last address is reported as the Lawrence County Jail in online court records, was arrested on Wednesday, January 31, in connection with a shooting that allegedly happened last week.
According to affidavits of probable cause, used in filing charges against Tarwater, Deputy Stults, with the Stone County Sheriff’s Department, responded to East Main Street in Hurley just after 3 p.m. on Friday, January 26, in reference to shots fired.
Once on scene, Stults spoke with two individuals who said they witnessed the shooting. One man told the deputy he was in front of his residence when a red car, with Tarwater in the passenger seat, pulled up. Tarwater allegedly said he was done and pulled out a gun. The man then reportedly took off his jacket and said, “Here I am.” Tarwater then allegedly fired several more shots from the vehicle into the trees.
The other witness said he was standing on his property and saw the passenger of the car stick his arm out of the window and fire several shots.
Tarwater was reportedly found in the home of Kayla Tarwater, 23, of Crane. Detective Duren, of the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, and another officer responded to Kayla Tarwater’s home after being informed that Justin was hiding there. Kayla allegedly told the officers that Justin was not there and that she had not seen him.        Soon after leaving, Duren was told that Justin was indeed in the residence. The officers spoke to the owner of the home and requested permission to search the home and execute the felony arrest warrant. Justin Tarwater was reportedly found hiding in a back bedroom.
Justin Tarwater was arrested and booked into the Stone County Jail. He faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon by exhibiting and the Class B felony of discharging a weapon from a motor vehicle. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 cash only bond.
After Justin was arrested, Kayla Tarwater was also taken into custody. She is charged with hindering the prosecution of a felony, a Class E felony offense. She was held on $5,000 bond.
