A 17 year old Crane High School student was seriously injured on Wednesday, September 5, after his truck crossed the center line into the path of a Crane school bus.
According to a release from Crane R-III School District, the incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. last Wednesday. A Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report indicates that the crash happened on Swinging Bridge Road, about two miles south of Crane.
The report states the that 2015 International school bus, Crane School Bus #4, was traveling south on Swinging Bridge when a northbound 1996 Chevrolet S-10, driven by 17 year old male student of the school* crossed into the bus’s path.
The S-10 failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. It then crossed into the path of the bus, striking it on the front driver’s side.
The bus, driven by John Hash, 61, of Crane, had eight students on board when the incident happened.
According to the school, none of the students riding the bus were injured to the point they were taken in by EMS. However, some of the parents did take their children to be checked out, just to be safe. Crane Superintendent Dr. Chris Johnson reports that all of the students on the bus are fine.
The 17 year old driver of the Chevrolet S-10 suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was airlifted to Cox South Hospital in Springfield for treatment. The Highway Patrol indicates he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Public Facebook posts from the young man’s family indicate that he is in stable condition at the hospital awaiting surgeries and other procedures.
“The driver of the other vehicle is also one of our students. Please pray for him and his family,” concludes the school’s release on Facebook.
As of press time on Tuesday, estimated costs to repair the bus, which had extensive damage, was not available. The school is leasing another bus through its insurance company.
Dr. Johnson expects the insurance to total the bus out, however, given the severity of the damage.
The 1996 Chevrolet S-10 was totaled. Both it and the bus were towed by Double Eagle Towing.
