Stone County Residents Eligible For Free Tax Prep
February 20, 2020
University of Missouri Extension’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program started helping county residents file their taxes on January 21 this year. The free program continues to the first week of April, so if you want help from the program in filing your taxes, there is still time to get it.
Volunteers are available at the Galena Library on Wednesdays through April 8 this year. Volunteers are on hand from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
For readers in the southern portion of the county, the VITA program is at the Kimberling Area Library on Thursdays, with the last day being April 9. The hours are the same at both VITA sites.
To make an appointment for free tax preparation, call (417) 357-6812.
Taxpayers with an AGI of $57,000 or less can get free tax preparation. Additionally, families meeting certain criteria are eligible for a credit of up to $6,557.
Please note that volunteers are not trained to file business taxes, long forms or capital gains and losses. Taxpayers hoping to file with that sort of information should see a paid preparer the Stone County VITA information notes.
After making an appointment, be sure to bring the following to get your taxes prepared:
Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and each of your dependent children; W-2 forms for every job you and or your spouse worked in 2019; a personal check if you want your refund directly deposited; and a form 1095A if you purchased health insurance through the marketplace, or an exemption certificate number if granted a waiver; finally, you may optionally bring your 2018 tax return.
Other documents you may need
In 2019 did you:
• Receive unemployment compensation? Bring your Form 1099G
• Pay for child care? Bring the total you paid for child care expenses and the name, address, and Tax ID/Social Security Number of the child care provider
• Pay student loan interest? Bring the total of the student loan interest you paid
• Pay for tuition? Bring Form 1098 for you, your spouse, and/or dependent children
