Stone County Library Receives Summer Reading Grant

February 13, 2020
Isaac Estes-Jones

Children in Stone County can look forward to summer reading fun this year, thanks in part to a grant from the Missouri Secretary of State.

The library was recently awarded a $4,931 Summer Library Program Grant.

“Libraries play a vital role in providing learning opportunities to people of all ages,” said Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. “These grants help Missouri’s libraries provide educational programs during a time when many patrons, particularly younger ones, have a less structured environment.”

While Stone County’s Summer Reading Program will be provided to everyone, these funds will be primarily directed toward programs for younger patrons, elementary school aged and below.

“This year, part of it will go towards bringing in performers. Last year, we were able to have three of the performers at Crane Elementary, and one at Blue Eye Elementary. The rest were held at the library branches.  It was a great way for us to reach the kids in summer school,” said Rebecca Payne, Stone County Library Director.

Last summer, the library brought in musicians and magicians, among other performers, to educate and entertain the summer reading participants.

“The other part of the grant will be used for marketing to send mailers out around the county with program information. We will have a lot of great programs and want everyone to know what’s going on at the library,” said Payne.
