"Save The Jenkins Bridge" Group Offers Update

June 10, 2020
Final preparations are in the works to transfer the ownership of Jenkins Bridge from the Barry County Commission to the Jenkins Bridge Restoration Foundation.

Swimming, picnicking, and fishing at the Jenkins Bridge are part of the family heritage of many families in the Barry-Lawrence-Stone Counties area. The bridge was built in 1909 and dedicated in 1910, making it 111 years old. Few one-lane, wooden floor bridges remain in Missouri.

The group is under the leadership of Dawna Skaggs, president; Tony Cope, vice-president; and Denise Prisk, secretary/treasurer.

Approximately 20 interested individuals have thus far written bylaws, secured status of a 501 c 3 tax-exempt corporation, has insurance quotes, and is in the process of having an engineer estimate the needed repairs for a pedestrian bridge. All of these preparations cost money. When ownership is completed there will be continued expenses of insurance and maintenance.

The current need is for funds to make the repairs. When it is safe to have group gatherings, the organization will have a fourth fundraiser. Right now tee shirts are being sold and can be ordered by going on line to Jenkins Bridge page on Facebook or contacting Dawna Skaggs on Facebook. Donations can be mailed or deposited in 1st Independent Bank, 1100 South Elliott Ave, Aurora, MO 65605.

The next meeting of the group will be June 16, 6 p.m., at Jenkins Fire Station #1, on the bluff above the 248 bridge on Flat Creek. Any interested individual is welcome.
