Rep. Hudson Encourages Residents Check Unclaimed Property
June 6, 2019
Thousands of Missourians have unclaimed property currently being held by the Missouri State Treasurer’s Office and state Rep. Brad Hudson wants to make sure that property ends up in the hands of its rightful owners. Hudson is encouraging residents of his district to go online at www.ShowMeMoney.com to check for property that may be rightfully theirs.
“Chances are high that you or someone you know has unclaimed property being held by the Unclaimed Property Division,” said Hudson, R-Cape Fair. “Whether it’s from a forgotten bank account, a government refund, or the contents of a safe deposit box; there are a variety of ways you can have unclaimed property without realizing it. This is money that is owed to the people of Missouri that is currently in the possession of the State Treasurer’s Office. I encourage everyone in our district to check with the Treasurer’s Office to determine if they have property to claim.”
According to the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office, one in ten Missourians has unclaimed property; and the average return is $300. The Treasurer’s Office is currently holding $1,623,497.14 that belongs to approximately 22,763 residents of District 138. This is property that has been left at banks, insurance companies, apartment complexes, etc. and has been unclaimed for 5 years. The state will keep the property until the rightful owner is found. In total, the state has more than $1 billion in unclaimed property in more than 5 million owner accounts.
To see if you or someone you know has property being held by the state, you can log on to www.showmemoney.com, or write the Treasurer’s Office at P.O. Box 1004, Jefferson City, MO 65102-1004.
