Rep. Brad Hudson Praises Tourism Boost For SW MO
August 15, 2019
State Rep. Brad Hudson announced a new grant to assist with marketing tourism in Missouri. The Missouri Division of Tourism awarded more than $880,000 to the Table Rock Lake Chamber of Commerce, Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Springfield CVB to help fund marketing projects designed to increase tourism in Southwest Missouri. These organizations will match the state funding with local funding to support specific tourism-related projects.
“Tourism continues to rank as one of the most important revenue and job-producing industries in the state,” said Hudson (R- Cape Fair). “Those of us in the Ozarks are quite aware of all the visitors tourism brings to our state and we’re excited about marketing these opportunities to other Americans.”
Hudson represents Christian, Stone and Taney counties, which includes Table Rock Lake and nearby Branson. According to the Division of Tourism, during Fiscal Year 2018, Missouri saw 42 million visitors and more than 301,000 Missourians were directly employed in the tourism industry. Overall, tourism had a $17.2 billion total economic impact on the Show-Me State in Fiscal Year 2018.
Comprised of a diverse group of businesses in every county in the state, the travel industry has a broad footprint in Missouri. The money visitors spend boosts revenue at businesses, which employ Missouri residents. State and local government benefit from travel as well. State government collects taxes on the gross receipts of businesses operating in the state as well as sales and use taxes levied on the sale of goods and services to travelers. Local governments also collect sales and use taxes generated by traveler purchases.
“In Branson, there are more than 100 shows and 400 restaurants that attract more than 7 million visitors a year,” said Hudson. “That’s an important piece of our economy and community. With this tourism grant, we’ll be able to market this asset and all the other businesses and locales that make Missouri a great place to visit.”
The matching funds from the Division of Tourism can be used for search engine marketing, media advertising and approved tourism marketing platforms designed to attract visitors and boost their spending in the state.
