The Stone County Sheriff is encouraging citizens to be extra vigilant and cautious as a pair of alleged package thieves are held at the time of this writing.
According to a Facebook post from the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, officers were dispatched to the Reeds Spring area on a tip about a package thief.
A short time later, officers located the vehicle alleged to have been driven by the thief. Inside, deputies reportedly found the stolen packages that were opened and the contents missing.
Also in the vehicle were several other new items not in packages.
Two people were arrested in connection with the theft. However, as of presstime Tuesday afternoon, charges have not been filed in Stone County Courts. We have not reported the alleged thieves identities at this time.
The Sheriff is asking for anyone who has had packages stolen, especially those living in the Reeds Spring, Talking Rocks and DD Highway areas, to call the non-emergency dispatch number, (417) 339-9147, to report the thefts. Detectives will be following up on these reports.
Package thefts are a common occurrence as more and more people shop online for the holidays. Some potential ways to avoid theft include having packages shipped to your workplace, if possible, or to the home of a friend or relative who you know will be home when boxes are delivered.
Other options include setting up scheduled deliveries or changing the delivery location, if possible. UPS and other shipping providers allow recipients to create accounts and request changes to some deliveries.
Porch security cameras and other home protection devices, like video doorbells, can help the police in identifying thieves.
