More than 100 turned out for the inaugural CHANCES of Stone County Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday at Enterprise Park Lanes, leaving organizers thankful that so many will help the non-profit continue to grow.
The Bowl-A-Thon raised money Saturday through sponsorships as well as a silent auction and raffle and, even better, raised its profile in the community.
CHANCES of Stone County was formed as recently as 2009 by a group of parents with developmentally disabled children. The acronym stands for Community Helping Able Neighborhood Citizens Experience Success.
“We just rented our first meeting and activity room in Reeds Spring,” said Cherie Smetana, a board member of CHANCES of Stone County. “It has six kitchens, we are hoping to make two of those handicap accessible to provide life skills for the developmentally disabled in Stone County.”
Their new “home” will allow them to bring life skills and therapies to Stone County instead of families being forced to drive hours for assistance. And, other group activities such as their M.A.D. Saturdays where they provide music, art & dance therapies which brings therapies and experiences to the whole family.
Additionally, CHANCES of Stone County has been supported through passage of state Senate Bill 40, the Stone County Developmentally Disability Board, in which a small percentage of property taxes go toward developmentally disabled citizens in Stone County. This year SCDDB was able to provide funding for Camp Barnabas which CHANCES has done in the past. This freed up some money to be used in other areas. The non-profit also is in its sixth year with the PGA Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper.
Their next community event is October 6 at Caring Americans for their Octoberfest in Branson West.
CHANCES is seeking area professionals to join its Board of Directors, said President Peggy Ackfeld. Anyone interested, please contact Peggy at (417) 294-1207.
