McCord Bend holding AED/CPR Classes

November 28, 2019
Isaac Estes-Jones
The people of McCord Bend have the opportunity to learn to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) at two trainings in December. The village purchased two AEDs thanks to a grant from the Skaggs Legacy Foundation and now will hold trainings to instruct citizens how to use the lifesaving
devices.

Each training will hold only eight people so interested villagers should sign up quickly. Mandi Carr, trustee chairperson for the Village of McCord Bend, said, “We will be offering classes to the residents of McCord on two dates in December. Each class can only hold eight people, so they need to be signed up
as soon as possible.”

The trainings will be held on Thursday, December 5, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, December 7, at 9 a.m. Both trainings will be held in the village office building.

AED devices can make a dramatic impact on the outcome for people who suffer from a heart attack. “In events of sudden cardiac arrest outside of the hospital, every minute that goes by without early defibrillation and effective CPR decreased the survival rate by as much as 10 percent. Having an AED available and having more of our residents trained both in its use and in effective CPR can increase the survival rate dramatically,” said Carr.

The village received $4,875 in grant funds to purchase the devices and train people in the village. AEDs use voice prompts to walk people through how to place electrodes on the chest of someone suffering from cardiac arrest. While the devices will give instructions, some familiarity with
the way they work can go a long way to using precious moments to save someone’s life.

Those in McCord Bend interested in attending the trainings should contact village administrators to sign up as soon as possible.
