Dolores Shiveley, the long-time editor of the Stone County Republican and Crane Chronicle, has died. She was 93.

Dolores and her husband Benton operated the Dells Rapids Tribune in South Dakota before moving to Fairview, where they ran a small dairy farm.

In 1965, the Shiveleys moved to Crane to become the publishers and editors of the Stone County Republican and The Crane Chronicle, moving to Crane just a couple of years later.

Dolores brought us the local news here in Stone County for over 30 years. She kept all of us informed of local celebrations, victories, tragedies, new births, and beginnings. She made sure we all had treasured clippings to save of our children’s accomplishments at school.

Dolores loved her time at the newspaper.

Jami Lower worked with Dolores for over twenty years, starting just out of high school. She described Dolores as quiet and reserved but absolutely hilarious at times.

Though she was passionate about running the newspaper, she was even more passionate about her family, who she cherished deeply.

“She loved her family beyond anything, family was everything,” Lower said.

Dolores and Benton raised five sons. Bill, Roger, and Terry came first, then Chuck and David several years later.

Those who knew the Shiveleys knew that you never saw one without the other. She and Benton did everything together. Lower reminisced about the couple; they got groceries together, took the paper to Cassville together to be printed, and went home for lunch together each day. Lower said she never once heard Dolores and Benton say a cross word or give even so much as an aggravated look at one another.

Lower chuckled as she said, “I always told her I wanted a marriage just like theirs, though I didn’t think I wanted that many boys.”

“She was good she was just good to everyone. She was an amazing lady .Dolores was just kind and generous, and thoughtful, just a true lady,” Lower added.
After Benton passed away, Chuck stepped in to help; everyone helped out. Chuck would go with Dolores to take the paper to be printed each week in Cassville.

In 1996 Dolores retired at 67 years old.

Dolores served as an alderman on Crane’s city council and mayor pro tern. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Crane Presbyterian Church. She held various leadership positions in both the Eastern Star and her church.

Services for Dolores Shively were held Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the Crane Presbyterian Church.
