Ignite at Lakewood, a Branson West church, sponsored a free gas giveaway to the first 100 vehicles at 5 p.m; on March 16.
Drivers piled into Fast Freddie's Phillips 66 early to make sure they received their free gas. The event lasted two hours. Each vehicle was allotted $20 worth of regular or premium gasoline. "This is great," said station owner Brian Oltjenbrun, as he looked across the lot and saw the long line of automobiles.
Under Pastor Rob Barringer's leadership, a small group of congregation members handed out bags of healthy snacks with information regarding local resources and upcoming events at various venues around the area. Other Ignite members handed out bananas, Gatorade, and Sonic corndogs. At the pumps, members and Oltjenbrun were filling the vehicles while the pastor cleaned the windshields.
A few motorists, having no prior knowledge of the giveaway, pulled in to buy gas and were joyfully surprised to find their visit to the pump was free. "This is nothing more than loving others in the name of Jesus Christ," said Barringer. As each car pulled away, the gifted and the gifters had big smiles on their faces.
