Leadership Book Discussions Begin In Republic During 2019

November 22, 2018

The goal is simple: get residents and business leaders reading about and talking about leadership.

A series of leadership book discussions have been set for 2019 in Republic. This is a partnership between the Springfield-Greene County Library, Republic Chamber of Commerce, and Greene County MU Extension.

The programs are free. An individual just needs to read or listen to the book ahead of time. “My hope is that these book discussions lead to improvements in our communities, organizations and our businesses that can have lasting impact,” said David Burton, county engagements specialist with University of Missouri Extension and a resident of Republic.

All book discussions will take place at the Republic branch of the Springfield-Greene County Library and will last one hour. The discussion meetings are at noon and participants can bring their own lunch.

“This is our starting point for discussions. But participants are encouraged to lead discussions at their place of work or even host a discussion at their local branch library,” said Burton. “The ultimate goal really is to make this a county-wide effort with multiple-partners.”

“O Great One: Little Story About the Awesome Power of Recognition” by David Novack with begin the series. The discussion will be lead by David Burton at noon, January 8, 2019, in the community room at the Republic Branch Library, 921 N. Lindsey Ave., Republic, MO 65738.

“You Win in the Locker Room First” by Jon Gordon, with a discussion led by Republic Schools Superintendent Dr. Chance Winstrom, at noon on March 12, 2019, at the Republic Library.

“Made to Stick” by Chip Heath, discussion lead by David Burton, at noon on May 14, 2019, in the community room at the Republic Branch Library.

“21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John Maxwell, discussion lead by Dr. Pam Duitsman county engagement specialist with University of Missouri Extension, September 10, 2019, in the community room at the Republic Branch Library, 921 N. Lindsey Ave., Republic, MO 65738.

“The Leadership Mind Switch: Rethinking How We Lead in the New World of Work,” by D.A. Benton, discussion lead by David Burton, county engagement specialist with University of Missouri Extension, at noon on November 12, 2019, in the community room at the Republic Branch Library, 921 N. Lindsey Ave., Republic, MO 65738.

“The Power of Positive Leadership: How and Why Positive Leaders Transform Teams and Organizations and Change the World,” by Jon Gordon, discussion lead by David Burton, county engagement specialist with University of Missouri Extension, at noon on January 14, 2020, in community room at Republic Branch Library, 921 N. Lindsey Ave., Republic, MO

These book discussions may also be shared live on the Facebook page of the Greene County Extension Council. It is a good idea to go ahead and follow the page in order to get notices.

Two special events are also being planned in 2019 around two additional leadership books.

“Taking People With You” written by David Nowack, will be the subject of some online discussions. At some point, Greene County MU Extension will a host special guest speaker and event in Springfield.

“Lead with a Story” by Paul Smith will also be the subject of a special conference/event with students from MU.
