Lady Bears Volleyball Off to a Fast Start
September 17, 2020
Lexi Miller and Hailey Eutsler
The Galena Lady Bears have played eight matches over the course of the last two weeks, and are off to a 4-3-1 record. The Lady Bears are poised to make some noise in a loaded SWCL, featuring perennial powerhouses in Billings and Blue Eye.
On August 28, the Lady Bears competed in the Verona Invitational Tournament. This is their first tournament of three for the 2020 season. Galena placed first in their pool playing with only six players, three being underclassmen. Freshmen Kaesha Walter and Bree Rice showed that they can handle the quick jump to the varsity circuit.
The first matchup of pool play was against the Lady Comets of Marionville. The Lady Bears took the first set 25-21, but fell in the second set 30-28. It was a highly contested match, led in kills by Lexi Miller with 7. Freshman Walter chipped in with 6 kills and senior Jaelyn Cutbirth provided 16 assists. This would be the only set the Lady Bears would drop in pool play, as they would go on to win the next 6 sets in a row against Exeter, Southwest, and Purdy.
Unfortunately, the low numbers hurt the Lady Bears in the semi-finals against a tough Greenfield team. Fatigue finally set in, as the Lady Bears lost in straight sets 25-23 and 25-20. A bright point in the match was that Freshmen Walter and Rice led the Lady Bears with 12 and 11 digs respectively. The Lady Bears finished 3rd in the tournament with only 6 players at their disposal.
Galena won the first 3 sets in the home opener against Niangua. The scores were 25-11, 25-5, and 25-12. Miller led the Lady Bears with 16 kills, Cutbirth led with 20 assists and 6 aces, and Sophomore Libero Taylor Jones added 19 digs. This was the first time this season that the Lady Bears had to play 3 out of 5 sets, as the tournament format only required best 2 out of 3 in the bracket round.
On Tuesday, September 8, the Lady Bears traveled to New Covenant Academy for their senior night. Unfortunately, the Bears did not come home with a win. The Lady Bears dropped the first two sets 25-12 and 25-18. They got on the board with a 25-17 victory in set 3 before eventually falling in the fourth set 25-11.
The Lady Bears looked to return to their winning ways on Thursday, September 10, as they took on the RUSH Homeschool team out of Springfield. This RUSH team did not lose a single match in the Jamboree at Galena on August 26, so the Lady Bears knew they would have their hands full. Lexi Miller once again led with 10 kills, but the Lady Bears lost in straight sets 26-24, 25-12, and 26-24.
This week, the Lady Bears will look to get back into the win column in contests Tuesday, September 15 vs. the Sparta Lady Trojans at home at 6:00 pm. The Lady Bears would love to have you in the crowd to cheer them on. They will also travel to Exeter Thursday the 17th to take on the Barry County foe.
