A juvenile was arrested last week in connection with a fatal shooting that happened near Clever.
According to a press release from Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader, Stone County deputies were dispatched to a residence on Richwood Schoolhouse Road, south of Clever, just before noon on Tuesday, March 27.
Although initially reported as a self-inflicted gunshot, investigators quickly realized the evidence did not support that conclusion.
“The original call was for a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Rader said.
33 year old Javen A. Mitchell was transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. He died at approximately 8 p.m.
“The suspect was taken into custody after the victim passed away,” Rader said.
Very little information has been made available about the suspect. Other media outlets have reported that the suspect was Mitchell’s 15 year old son, but The Chronicle has not been able to confirm that information at this time. Sheriff Rader did say that the suspect, “is being held in juvenile custody while awaiting formal charges.”
Because this is an ongoing investigation, Sheriff Rader advises anyone with any additional information to contact the Stone County Sheriff’s Office.
When contacted for an updates on Monday, April 2, Sheriff Rader said that an autopsy of the victim was scheduled for this week. He also addressed rumors that the suspect was arrested at school. “We took the suspect into custody after the victim passed away,” he said.
However, Clever School was placed in lockdown for less than an hour on Wednesday, March 28, Steve Carvajal, Clever Superintendent said. “I would call it a soft-lock down,” he said. “I got wind of it about 10:15, but there was never a threat or anything. We continued to have classes, we just wanted to be prepared in case the individual did come to school.”
According to the Stone County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, any charges will be filed through the 39th Circuit Juvenile Office out of Monett. When reached for comment, Chief Juvenile Officer Jill Braden said the office was unable to provide any information on charges.
