On May 4, 2017, a local resident from Stone County drove to Harter House Supermarket to shop. While she was in the store, a window in her vehicle was busted out and numerous items were stolen out of the vehicle including credit and debit cards. When the owner returned to her vehicle she immediately notified the police of what had happened.
Robert Smigiel, investigator with the Kimberling City Police Department, investigated the case. He was able to determine that the stolen debit card was immediately used, or attempted to be used, a couple of local businesses and at one location outside the county. The detective was able to obtain surveillance video or photographs from various sources that included images of the person involved and, in one instance, a license plate number off of the vehicle he was operating. That vehicle had been reported stolen out of Springfield and through follow up with Springfield law enforcement and others involved in that case, the suspect was eventually identified.
The case was presented to the Stone County Prosecutor’s office and felony property damage and stealing charges were filed on Jason Henson, 31, of Springfield. The defendant was arrested on a warrant earlier this year and on June 26, 2018, pled guilty to the felony charges. Stone County Associate Circuit Judge sentenced Henson to serve seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
“Mr. Henson has prior convictions in other jurisdictions for similar types of crimes and has been given many opportunities to change his ways and conform to the rules of society,” said Prosecutor Selby. “He has, however, continued in his criminal ways and due to the excellent investigative work on the part of Detective Smigiel we had the evidence to hold him accountable and seek an appropriate sentence in this case.”
