Health Department reminder on children’s vaccinations after New York reports polio case
The importance of childhood vaccinations has again been highlighted with the news that New York State has reported its first case of Polio in almost a decade. Polio is a childhood illness that has been eradicated by vaccine. The Polio case was diagnosed in an unimmunized young adult who ultimately experienced paralysis. Children are the most at risk for contracting the Polio virus.
The CDC recommends that by the time a child is 6 years old, they should have received 4 doses of the Polio vaccine. The following vaccines are required in the State of Missouri for children attending school.
•Kindergarten: All children ages 4-6 years need Dtap, Poliovirus, MMR and Varicella
•8th Grade: Children ages 11-12 need a Tdap and their first dose of Meningococcal vaccine
•12th Grade: All soon to be Seniors need their Meningococcal Booster
If you are uncertain about your child’s immunizations status, contact their primary healthcare provider or your school nurse. Stone County Health Department offers all of the required Missouri immunizations for students, as well as the Covid-19 vaccine and Flu shots annually.
