Gun Found At Crane School,
Superintendent Says Students Never In Danger

**UPDATE 3 PM May 23**

A press release was issued by Crane PD's Chief John Elmore Thursday afternoon.

Elmore states the individual who brought the firearm to the school was a 17 year old student. The gun was located in that individual's vehicle, which was parked on school grounds.

"At the time of this release, evidence suggests no indication of threats were made by the 17 year old and the investigation is ongoing at this time," the release concludes.

The 17 year old was taken into custody without incident.

A call went out Thursday morning, May 23, informing parents of Crane students that a hand gun was found on school grounds.

"There was a gun found on school ground this morning," said Dr. Chris Johnson, superintendent of Crane Schools.

Dr. Johnson was not able to divulge many details about the incident due to privacy laws with regard to students.

"We were informed there was a gun on school grounds and took immediate action," Johnson said. "It was never in the school and neither students nor staff were ever in danger."

School administrators followed established policies when they were informed about the gun. "The police were notified and protocols were followed," said Johnson.

"We never went into lock down because there was no need. No one was ever in danger," she said.

Parents received the call through the school's automated system after the event had been handled. "I just wanted to get out in front of this and let everyone know before rumors started to go around," said Dr. Johnson.

Thursday, May 23, is the last day of student instruction for the 2018-2019 school year.
