High School senior Dawson Sherer of Galena High School has received “Honorable Mention” for the 2020 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri’s top academic students in the graduating class of 2020. The announcement was made by Dr. Bob Baker, Principal at Galena High School.

Missouri Scholars 100 is a program sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MOASSP). Schools across Missouri were invited to nominate candidates for this statewide recognition. The selection is based primarily on a formula using the student’s grade point average and ACT or SAT score. Each student had to first meet criteria of an “Academic Decathlon” which included ten “events” designed to assure the academic strength of the student. To be nominated, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.750, a minimum ACT score of 39 or a minimum SAT score of 1,600, be ranked in the top 10 percent of their graduating class and have taken high-level courses in mathematics, science, English and foreign language. The student must also have excellent attendance, be an exemplary school citizen, and be involved in the school activity program.

While a student at Galena High School Dawson has been involved in multiple extracurricular activities including Beta Club, Student Council, FCA, FBLA, Academic Team, Cross Country, Basketball, Golf, Track and Field, and Baseball. Through his commitment to Beta Club and the Galena High School Leadership Class Dawson has dedicated hundreds of hours of volunteer work that has greatly benefitted the entire community. Dawson was also a representative of Galena High School at Missouri Boys’ State in the summer of 2019. During his high school athletics career Dawson was recognized on the All-State Academic Team for Cross Country, Track and Basketball. Additionally, he has achieved a number of post-season honors including All-SWCL in Basketball, Golf and Academic team; State qualifier in Golf; Multi-year Sectional Qualifier in Track & Field.

Clark Mershon, Executive Director of MOASSP said, “The Missouri Scholars 100 Program is one of the most premier academic recognition programs in the country. It is truly a celebration of learning. Students who are selected to this program have taken a rigorous course of study and have maintained the highest academic standards. The Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals wants to celebrate the achievement and success of these students and their schools.”

The entire faculty of Galena High School is proud of Dawson and this extraordinary honor.
