Water and sewer rates will be going up in the City of Galena for the first time in several years. The newly seated Galena City Council is holding a special public hearing on the rate increases on Tuesday, April 24, in compliance with state statutes.
The current water rates, established in 2013, will be going up by 2.5% this year to cover the cost of expenses and maintenance to the water and sewer system.
Currently, residents of the City of Galena pay $13 as a base rate, plus $3.10 per 1,000 gallons for water. Current sewer rates are $15 base and $8 per 1,000 gallons.
The base rate for water will be going up $0.33 to $13.44 and the per 1,000 gallon rate will increase by $0.08 to $3.18. The base rate for sewer will increase $0.38 to $15.38. The per 1,000 gallon rate will go up by $0.20 to $8.20.
These increases were first discussed and voted on at the January 9, 2018 meeting of City Council. The motion was taken up while the council discussed the city’s 2018 budget. According to minutes from that meeting, the council made a motion to increase income by 2.5%. Additionally, the city will be increasing the rates annually at budget time.
Annual rate increases are recommended by several agencies to ensure adequate coverage of the costs associated with running the sewer and water system.
The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, April 24, at 5:55 p.m. before the regular meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. All interested members of the public are invited to attend.
By point of comparison, water and sewer rates for the City of Crane follow.
Water rates for residential customers in Crane were established in 2008. For the first 1,000 gallons, the price is $15.20. For the next 3,000 gallons, the rate is $5.00 with the price per several thousand gallons decreasing as the number of gallons used increases.
Crane sewer rates were established in September of 2014. The first 1,000 gallons of sewer cost $7.13. The next 3,000 gallons are $3.83 and so on.
