Water and sewer increases of 2.5% will take effect starting with the June billing, following a vote and public hearing at Galena City Council on Tuesday, April 24.
As previously reported, this brings the base rate for water to $13.44 plus $3.18 per 1,000 gallons. The sewer rate will be $15.38 plus $8.20 per 1,000 gallons.
“I want to make sure everyone understands that these increases will help the city build its contingency funds, because we haven’t kept up with costs of operating the water system,” said Mayor John Coones.
The increases will continue for each of the next five years, said council member Deana Wells. “This way we can build our reserves and keep up with inflation,” she said.
Other matters discussed at the special meeting last Tuesday included necessary repairs to city streets. The council voted to put up for bids a repair for a long culvert on Main Street, for which the city is responsible.
The city council also set a date for the City’s Independence Day celebration. The event will be held on Saturday, June 30. The city will again purchase $2,500 in fireworks to be set off at the end of the event.
The Galena City Council meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. and the third Tuesday at 6 p.m. Agendas are posted outside of City Hall.
