Galena Media and Broadcasting Class Makes Events Accessible Online

With everything going on in our country regarding COVID-19, the Media and Broadcasting class is essential for many people to remain plugged in and support the various teams. The media broadcast class films live sporting events. We also have a weekly talk show with the coaches. Our class is also responsible for writing weekly articles that are submitted to the newspaper.
For the elderly, the Media and Broadcasting class provides the safest way possible to remain up to date on the team’s performances. Dick and Fern Sherer, Coach Sherer’s parents, rarely missed attending a game last year, but COVID has changed that. “We truly enjoy high school basketball, especially the Galena Bears. The live streaming of games has enabled us to continue to enjoy Bear basketball. Covid caused us not to be able to get out like normal. And as older fans, driving to some of the games that are an hour or two away can be challenging. The streaming has allowed us to enjoy and see the team develop. We think it’s great.” stated Fern Sherer
We enjoy this class because it broadcasts our play and keeps our friends and family safe in these challenging times without pushing an unnecessary risk. In a matter of just a few clicks, you could be watching us play live @citylinktv.com. Another aspect of this is that it keeps the players safe. For someone like myself, I feel a lot more comfortable knowing that there could be a lot more people in the crowd putting me at risk, but they chose to stay home because they know they have the accessibility to remain in the action risk-free! You might not consider initially that with this accessibility, family members and friends from all over the nation can tune in from the comfort of their home. I moved here last year from Minnesota, and many of my friends and family members are capable of watching because of what this class does. My best friend and I tune into almost every live stream game of each other’s so that neither of us is missing any of the action! My friend added, “Your live stream has been one of the easiest streams to access.”
In class, we spend a lot of time brainstorming different ideas on how to improve our work, such as the articles, intros, pictures, and quality. These things are broken down and talked about together, and then we apply the best ideas.
One of the many benefits of the live stream is that all of the games are recorded and uploaded to the website directly after the game. So if you weren’t able to hop onto the live stream during the game but wanted to come and watch it a few hours later, you would be able to log on and watch. That benefits many players because they can log onto the website and review game tape that way.
This class is also beneficial to many students in the class. Hunter Chase, a senior, said, “Media Broadcasting has taught me responsibility and has helped me be more vocal and more comfortable with public speaking.” The class, because of the public speaking aspect and technical writing, is an extra English credit for students.
Senior Emily Lingenfelter, said, “Media broadcasting has taught me communication skills and has benefited my people skills overall.” Emily is a very quiet student, but you would not know that listening to her does play-by-play for the Bears.
“Emily has been a great student and worker for the Media Team this year,” said Johnsie Martin, Median and Broadcasting teacher and sponsor. “It’s really awesome watching her come out of her shell this year. No one really knew what to expect when she first got into doing the play-by-play at the beginning of the season because she was so quiet, but it didn’t take long to realize she had a passion for it. Her knowledge of the game was also impeccable.”
The Media Team undergo an almost complete overhaul next year, as about 90% of the class are seniors. We will be looking to broadcast some of the baseball games this spring and look forward to expanding the program next year with hopefully a new crop of aspiring young broadcasters
