The Galena JH Bears had a busy week last week. On Monday, September 13 and Tuesday, September 14, the Bears traveled to Hurley to participate in the Hurley Invitational Tournament. The Bears played Hurley in the first round, and came away with a 51-3 victory. This victory truly was a team victory, as all seventh and eighth grade players played some good minutes and contributed to the lopsided victory. A strong defensive effort from the Bears was key, as they held the Tigers scoreless in the first half and surrendered only one 3-point field goal in the second half. Scoring was very balanced by the Bears. They were led by Cody Jones with fourteen, all coming in the first quarter, and Jaxon Foster and Esiya Weeks both dumped in seven apiece.
That set up a championship match up with the Billings Wildcats. The Bears knew going into the game that it would be a tough contest. The game was tied at nine at the end of the first quarter. The Bears would jump out to a small lead in the second quarter, as they would outscore the Wildcats by four. The turning point of the game was the third quarter, as the Bears outscored the Wildcats 17-6. The Bears were able to hold on to a 47-38 victory to claim the championship. Jacob Coones led the Bears defensive effort against the Wildcats, and a huge fourth quarter layup by Weston Ledford helped seal the deal for the Bears.
September 17, 2021, the Galena Bears matched up against the Southwest Trojans. Galena was able to hold Southwest to 0 points throughout the whole first half, giving Galena a comfortable 42 point lead. Galena shared the ball extremely well, with the scoring being very balanced. Southwest was able to get their first two points in the third, with Galena putting up eight points of their own. With Galena outscoring Southwest every quarter, one of the most impressive stats was Galena shot 80% from the free-throw line. final score: 63-3. Galena is set to play at Crane Sept. 28 at Purdy Oct. 1, and at MCE Oct. 2.
