Galena High Student Council earns top national award
For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, the Galena High School student council has been recognized as a 2022 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National of Student Council (NatStuCo). The NatStuCo program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
Over the course of the year Galena Student Council has worked to create an atmosphere of involvement and belonging in our school and community. Beginning in May of last year, council members planned events, such as the Veterans Appreciation Breakfast, honoring local heroes and their families, Red Ribbon Week, encouraging students to live drug free life, and organizing a food drive contest against the Hurley Tigers, to help members of the community in need.
Along the way they sought and acted upon input from the student body and community leaders.
“Receiving a National Gold Council of Excellence Award shows the utmost dedication a school’s students, leaders, and staff have made to making their community a better place,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “Galena High School has gone above and beyond in elevating student voice to ensure they are establishing a positive climate and culture, as well as fostering academic and social growth for all.”
“With 2021-22 being a return to a more normal school year, the council began looking for ways to revitalize school spirit, and get students involved in everything our school has to offer,” said Advisor, Matthew Carr. He added, “ The leadership skills of these students have grown immensely over the past year and I could not be more proud of their work in our school and community.”
To meet the requirements for the National Gold Council of Excellence Award, a student council must meet a variety of criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, the councils have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.
