The Table Rock Lake Chamber of Commerce and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library recently named Patty Watson the February Teacher of the Month. Watson teaches upper level math at Galena High School.
“Mrs. Watson constantly demonstrates a passion for math and helps our students understand the importance of education,” says Galena High School Principal Dr. Bob Baker. “She is as good a person and teacher as you could find. She’s phenomenal. Patty is one of the most passionate and energetic teachers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She absolutely adores teaching and is completely dedicated to helping all of her students succeed. She does not turn away a student if they need extra help either before or after school and will stay as long as necessary to thelp them understand.”
Watson is in her 23rd year at Galena High School. “She is very creative in her math lesson plans and constantly has her students engaged in a variety of activities including leading her Geometry students in a game of “Angle Twister” in the bus lane,” Baker said.
In addition to teaching upper-level math classes like College Algebra, Algebra II and Geometry, Watson is the junior class sponsor, putting her in charge of Prom each year. She is also the leader of student council and the Future Teachers of America chapter at the high school. “She takes each of these responsibilities seriously as she believes that they help make for a well-rounded student and add to their education experience,” Baker said.
Watson is also commended for adapting to new formats and keeping students engaged. “As building Principal,” Baker said, “I always enjoy being in Mrs. Watson’s classroom as I know that the students are engaged and her passion for teaching is always on full display. She has continued to adapt with new formats and challenges and has always been able to communicate math concepts to her students.”
Baker is not the only one who has noticed her staying power. “She was my parent’s favorite teacher and she is now my favorite teacher -- that to me shows how great a teacher she is in how she has adapted to the times and technology,” said senior Adam Cunnyngham.
Senior Kinsey Stephens adds, “She is always full of energy and encourages and pushes us to our best ever day. She comes up with funny songs to help us remember almost every math concept and is always willing to help us whenever we need it.”
“Over the years, Patty has established herself as one of the most beloved teachers at Galena High School. On multiple occasions, students have come back and recounted stories involving the catch songs that she created, as well as many of her sayings,” Baker said.
Congratulations Mrs. Patty Watson.
