Galena High Adding Ladies Golf For 2018-19 Year

August 9, 2018
PicturePictured above, in the back row, are David Sherer, Galena Athletic Director; Bill Hasler, Ledgestone/Stonebridge General Manager and Pastor Cliff of the Kimberling City United Methodist Church. In the front row, President of Ledgestone Ladies Golf Association, Betty Alexander; three Galena Golfers-Alexis Miller (sophomore), Savannah Baker (freshman) and Chalice Sherer (sophomore) and Liz, a Ledgestone Ladies Golf Association Member.
Galena will be adding Girls High School golf this year. High School Principal, Dr. Bob Baker, will coach during this inaugural season. Practice started August 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. Their home course will be Indian Tree. Special thanks to Linda, Dwayne and the staff for all they do for Galena boys and girls golf.
Hearing that Galena was starting a girls golf program, the Ledgestone Ladies Golf Association of Branson West wanted to get involved. They started a collection of funds and allocated enough money to purchase four new or barely used sets of clubs for Galena High School. The Association stipulated the clubs will be property of the school and be only used for the girls program.
Betty Alexander, the president of the organization, communicated with Athletic Director David Sherer in regards of the donation. David Sherer, Galena Athletic Director, said, “It is a funny story. My mom told some of her friends in her church choir, who are members of the association, that Galena was starting a girls program and might need some help. From there I was told to contact Betty. The Ledgetone Ladies Golf Association was pumped that we were starting a girls golf team and have been a tremendous help. We have girls that do not have clubs and would be deterred from playing. Now with this gracious donation, that is no longer an issue. We are so blessed.”
“I believe it is the first true Girls program in Stone County,” Sherer continued. “In the last 5 years of the boys program, girls were allowed to play, but had to play from the boys tees and play in the spring. Now they will be playing in the fall and will be playing from the women’s tees. I am excited to see their scores go much lower even though many of them actually were able to compete against their male counterparts from the further distance. We expect to have anywhere from five to seven golfers.”
Additional thanks are also extended to the Kimberling City United Methodist Church and Pastor Cliff along with the Kimberling City Elks Club who are also taking a vested interest in the program by donating more clubs, bags, walking carts, golf balls and other needed equipment. Also a special thanks to Bill Hasler, former Golf Pro and current general manager at Ledgestone for donating beginner/elementary PE equipment and starting golf equipment to further promote the sport. Bill is also looking to do some additional fundraisers for team equipment, according to the school.
