The Galena Bears had an outstanding outcome at the Hollister Invitational meet last Thursday. With the meet being in harsh weather conditions and all the rolling hills the course has, the Bears had a strong showing. There were lots of top runners in the district which all performed up to their expectations. Many of the Bears runners were able to get PR’s and they were all satisfied with their times. But they still have more work to do to achieve their goals.
None of the Galena Bear runners were expecting to place in this race and run a new personal record (PR) because of the weather conditions that day, although there were several suprises during the day.
Galena’s top runner, Cameron Sartin, ran a new PR time of 18:11 and placed fifth. Galena’s second runner, Colton Ellingsworth, set a new personal time of 18:37 and placed ninth. The third Galena runner, Jacob Martin, surprised many people with his new PR of 20:41, he placed 40th. The bear’s fourth runner, Cameron Elder, ran a time of 21:18 and placed 45th, right behind him was Galena’s fifth runner, Charley Smith, who ran an amazing PR time of 21:21 and placed 46th.
The Hollister meet did not end up hosting a JV race, so the JV boys ran in the varsity race. Finishing sixth for Galena was Brandon Lingefelter, with a season PR of 22:31 and he finished in 68th place. The Bear’s seventh runner, Cooper Sartin, ran a time of 25:25 and placed 99th. Galena’s eighth runner, Kelby Shirkey, ran a time of 26:22 and placed 111th. Galena’s last runner, Sam Tolbert, ran a time of 28:07 and placed 119th. The Galena Bears ended up finishing fourth as a team out of 13 teams. After all the disadvantages the varsity boys had to face, they still came out on top and had a very successful meet.
The varsity girls race was stacked with a variety of talent. With the brutal conditions the girls were still able to have great times. There were about 80 runners in the girls race. The first runner for the Bears, Maci Doak, finished with a time of 26:08 and placed 36th. The second runner for the Bears, Harley McCullough, finished with a 29:51 and placed 54th. With the Bears going into this with nothing to lose, they were at the meet to compete and did just that.
The Middle School race was also full of talent, although we only had one boy running he still performed well and had the high school kids to cheer him on. The only runner, Alfredo Perez, finished with a 2 mile time of 18:46 and placed 60th. We did not have any middle school girls that ran at this meet. The Galena Bears had a great meet and are preparing for their next meet at East Newton which they are all hoping to get their best times.
