Galena Boys basketball
December 6, 2018
Last week, the Galena Boys Varsity played in the Diamond Tournament. The first two nights, the Bears did not find the mark falling to host Diamond 48-50 on Thursday and Joplin McAuley on Friday, 40-50. The Bears did salvage a win on Saturday against Wheaton, 51-43.
On Thursday, the Bears got in a hole and were down 11 at half. The Bears could not find the bucket in the 2nd quarter. They did in the 3rd, erasing that deficit and actually took the lead for a little bit putting up 21 in the frame. The Bears missed free throws and layups that were the deciding factor in the two point defeat.
Junior guard Dawson Sherer hoisted 20, sophomore Wyatt Snelson had 11 points and 14 rebounds and junior Skylar Nielsen added 10 for the Bears.
Night two the Bears did not find the basket in quarters one and four. Missed layups and other easy opportunities played into the defeat. The Bears were short handed as sophomores Grant Harness and Presten Essary are still sidelined with early season injuries. Junior big man Davon Stewart did provide a rebounding and a defensive spark in the first half. The Bears were led in scoring by juniors Skylar Nielsen and Dawson Sherer both hitting double digits while sophomore Wyatt Snelson led the team in rebounding.
In the final game of the tournament, the Bears looked to get back in the win column. The Bears struggled in the second quarter with Nielsen sitting on the bench with three fouls. The Bears got a spark from junior Trenton Ellingsworth on the offensive end with 2 assist and a big bucket before the end of the quarter. Ellingsworth also had three big rebounds in the frame. The Bears played up to potential in the third on both ends of the floor and never looked back after that. The Bears showed better balance on scoring as four Bears were in or approaching double figures. Sherer with 18, Nielsen 10, Snelson 10 and junior Chase Gallion added 9.
