Galena Bear Track: Running Away With Gold

 Alexis Miller
Our Galena track team has had a strong start to their season. 2020-2021 is technically Galena’s second year competing in track meets due to the shutdown last year. The running Bears have traveled to two meets this season, Springfield Catholic and Diamond. At Springfield Catholic, top medalist Chalice Sherer placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and second in the 300-meter hurdles, and Cameron Sartin placed fourth in the 3200. At the Diamond meet, Sherer placed first in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, beating the second place by two seconds. At Diamond, Sartin placed third in 1600, and Macy Doak medaled in the triple jump, 100-meter dash, and 200-meter dash. Finally, the boy’s team medaled in the 4x800 relay.

Bears Golf Team Shows Improvement At Clever Tournament

Emily Lingenfelter
On Monday, April 5, the Galena boys golf team competed in another exciting tournament. This time the boys took their golf clubs to the Hidden Valley Golf Course to participate in the Clever tournament. Twelve teams participated in the Clever tournament, and the Bears finished in tenth place. However, all of Galena’s scores improved significantly compared to the last time the boys golfed. This was the first golf competition that senior Colby Stacy competed in since his sophomore year due to COVID-19. Stacy was a little rusty initially but became more consistent in figuring out his golfing strategy throughout the day. Senior Hunter Chase also had a big day and did very well, considering it was his first-ever high school golf tournament. Junior Jacob Martin also improved greatly at this tournament. Martin made an exceptional improvement of ten strokes since the last tournament. Junior Zane Tolbert’s improvements led him to become the Bears’ top golfer. He took off 19 strokes from his last 18-hole-event at Monett just one week prior. Tolbert finished in the top half of the Clever tournament. We are excited by the boy’s progress and cannot wait to see what this season holds for them. Upcoming tournaments for the Galena Boys Golf Team are April 8 at Seymour and April 12 at Forsyth. The team hopes to see you there.

Galena Baseball Experiences a Tough Week Against State Ranked Opponents

The Galena Bears played Jasper on April 3 in a doubleheader along with Dora. The boys worked hard and hit well in the game against Jasper. We took the win against Jasper early with a close score of 10 to 6. The same night our boys played Dora, and we took the win again for a total of 2 wins in one night. This was kind of an easy game for our boys as they took the win 12 to 2. Dora took the fight
The Bears played the Crane Pirates, one of our nearby rivals. However, we did lose to them 10 to 5. The boys had a questionable play at third whether they were out, but our boys fought hard to keep up. We had some errors and some good hits, but it was just not enough.
The Galena Bears played Cooter on April 10. Cooter is ranked number three in Class one, and our boys managed to score three runs. While we did lose 13-3, it was a great learning experience. We have a great infield and outfield that played hard. Errors were an issue, as the Bears committed eight on the night. Cannon Keithley and Logan Thompson combined in the losing effort, striking out eight and only allowing five earned runs.
