Galena Bears Baseball is Hungry for Post-Season Play in 2021-2022

September 2, 2021
The 2020-2021 season was disappointing for the Bears, but senior leaders are hungry to improve and return the Bears to post-season play for the first time in five years. Derwin McGownd coaches the Galena Bears. 2021 is McGownd's 16th year coaching and third year as the Bear's head coach. "I think this year will be a great year for us! We have plenty of leadership coming back and some underclassmen that will be fighting for a varsity spot," says Coach McGownd. The Bears will return six starters and have high hopes for the season. "With the guys we have coming back, I am looking forward to this group in the upcoming fall and spring," says Mcgownd.
Last year's senior class consisted of some key roles in the Bears lineup. Harness was a key athlete in the lineup and was a plus position player. Logan Thompson was a power-hitting first baseman, and Mcknight was a corner infielder.
The Bears will return senior starters Logan Busbey, centerfield;  Cameron Robertson, right-handed pitcher; Dillon Batson, second base; Arin McCullough, outfield; Ethan Bailey, first base; and sophomore Chase Robertson, catcher.
"Robertson and Busbey will be our main guys on the mound this fall and upcoming spring season along with sophomore Cannon Keithley." states Coach Mcgownd. Some new faces seeing a lot of varsity time are junior Robert Carter, Levi Harris, and  Nathen Dinger. Another face that could see time in the outfield is freshman Wyatt Doak; however, he is currently on the injured list.
The Bears hope to put a solid offensive season together this year after hitting .222 as a team last spring. How well the Bears perform offensively will play a large part in how their season ends up.
Busbey and Robertson predict the Bears to go 18-3 this fall.
