A fundraiser for Stone County Deputy Craig Shirkey has been set for Sunday, October 21, in the Kimberling City Shopping Center. Shirkey was injured on the job early in 2018 and has not been able to return to work.
Shirkey has been receiving 2/3 of his pay through worker’s comp since February of this year. Recently, doctors have told him that this is likely a career ending injury.
The benefit will start at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 21. There will be music from the Highway 13 Band, a catfish dinner and live and silent auctions. Other activities are set to include a bounce house for the kids, a cornhole tournament, cakewalk, antique and classic car show and an emergency vehicle expo.
The benefit is being organized by Terry Bible and Layne Morrill. An account for Shirkey and his family has also been set up at Table Rock Community Bank for those that want to make direct monetary donations. The account is the “Craig Shirkey Fund.”
The organizers say, “Please come out and support this community fundraising event... Let’s all show our support for one of our own Stone County families.”
According to a flier for the event, the Stone County Citizens in Action (CIA) group and the Stone County Shrine Club will be on hand to help with the event. Donations for the auction are still being accepted.
On January 7, 2018, Shirkey and another deputy responded to a residence in Galena on a domestic violence call. In a statement issued at the time of Shirkey’s injury, Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader said, “Basically, as he and the other officer were taking the suspect down some wet stairs, the suspect started making some movements that sent all three of them down the stairs and onto the deck below.”
The individual involved in that case is Blake Hammers, who was 21 years old at the time. According to the probable cause statement used in prosecuting him, Hammers began yelling and struggling with the deputies as they were escorting him from the property. After the fall, Deputy Shirkey reportedly made a sound “of extreme pain,” but continued to help with the arrest.
Hammers pleaded guilty to assault in the second degree and felony resisting arrest on May 22, 2018. He was sentenced to 120 days of shock incarceration with the Missouri Department of Corrections. Online court records indicate he successfully completed that shock time on September 28. Hammers received a suspended execution of further incarceration with DOC and five years of supervised probation.
The Shirkey family is native to Stone County. They had the Coon Ridge Store some years ago. Craig Shirkey and his family will be at the fundraiser on Sunday, October 21.
