The University of Missouri Stone County Extension office will offer free tax preparation starting Wednesday, January 31 as part of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Tax preparation will be held on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the Stone County Annex in Galena and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Stone County OACAC Neighborhood Center in Branson West.
“University of Missouri Extension, Stone County partners with the Stone County Commissioners, White River Electric Cooperative-Operation round UP, Healthy Families Taskforce of Stone and Taney Counties, Stone County OACAC and the Stone County Annex to provide this service and financial education to the citizens and residents of Stone County,” said Jim Spencer, Ag. Business specialist with the University of Missouri Extension.
To be eligible for free tax preparation, taxpayers must have an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $57,000 or less. To qualify for the earned income credit, families will have to meet additional requirements.
According to a release about the project, tax preparation services are provided by volunteers, who are not trained to do business taxes, itemized deductions or capital gains or losses. Taxpayers with those special cases are encouraged to see a paid preparer.
Appointments will be booked beginning Tuesday, January 16. To book an appointment, call (417) 357-6812. Bring original Social Security cards for all family members, W-2s for all jobs held in 2017, a personal check for direct deposit, plus any other pertinent forms, such as forms 1095-A or 1099G.
