What is Arbor Day? It is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting & care. Founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, it is celebrated on the last Friday in April.
Stone County Soil & Water Conservation District is offering to the public “Free Tree Seedlings” in honor of this day, Friday, April 27, 2018. The trees/shrubs are 1-3 year old bare root seedlings and will be available on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last.
We will have approximately 400 seedlings including River Birch, Pin Oak, Pitch Loblolly Pine, Norway Spruce, Wild Plum, Bald Cypress, White Pine, Ninebark, Rose Mallow, Silver Maple, Washington Hawthorn, Redbud. These are natives to our area. You can look these up online to view images. Limitations may apply. Planting instructions will be available.
We will also be celebrating the week of April 23 for stewardship week. The 2018 stewardship theme is “Watersheds: Our Water, Our Home.” Water is one of our most precious resources. Watersheds supply water for drinking and recreation, irrigation and manufacturing, and wildlife and bird habitat. It is essential that each of us adopts good water conservation habits so that we can keep our water resources safe and productive now and for future generations.
We also have the water sample kits here at our office provided by the Stone Co. Health Department should you need to test your water.
Pick up your trees at 108-B Cortney Lane, Crane on Friday, April 27. For more information, call (417)723-8389.
