On Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 2 p.m., the Stone County Historical/Genealogical Society, along with Galena Girl Scout Troop 71860, will conduct an American Flag retirement ceremony by the flag pole at the vacant lot next to the Museum in Crane 103 Main Street. The SCHGS has consented to put the U.S. Flag in the holders in the City of Crane. In preparation, they found many of the older flags were torn and needed replacement. Thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals in the city funds were raised to allow the purchase of new flags.
Due to the number of old flags needing retirement, the Society felt that Veterans Day would be an appropriate time to conduct this ceremony. This will also give people a chance to add their veteran to the Stone County Scroll of Honor. The Scroll is a memorial to all former and current residents of Stone County who served in the military. It can be found at the Stone County Historical Museum at 103 Main Street in Crane and also in the courthouse lobby in Galena. A $5 donation is requested for the upkeep of the scroll.
