Deputies Find Man Dead Following Standoff

March 28, 2019

Isaac Estes-Jones

A Springfield man was found dead of suicide after an hours long stand-off with sheriff’s deputies last week. The man reportedly fired several shots at deputies before barricading himself in a residence, eventually taking his own life.

According to Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader, deputies were dispatched to Dockhouse Lane, off of Y Highway, at 3:15 a.m. after an open line 911 call. They were met by a woman standing alone in the roadway.

While deputies were speaking with her, the male suspect came outside of the residence and opened fire. Rader was not sure of the exact number of shots fired, but three did hit one of the patrol vehicles on scene. The deputies and the woman then took cover in the woods before moving to a secure location, according to Rader.

During this time, the male suspect reportedly went back into the residence, although Rader indicates that he came out and was walking around outside at least one more time before the conclusion to the events.

Officials tried unsuccessfully to make contact with the male suspect, but communication was never opened.

Approximately 40 minutes after the initial contact, officers reported hearing more shots coming from the vicinity of the residence. They were not sure if the shots came from inside the house or from somewhere outside.

More deputies arrived and helped secure a perimeter.

After several hours of silence, the decision was made to enter the house. Before coming closer, however, Rader said the officers used a drone to clear the area.

“We put up the drone to make sure he wasn’t hiding in the field or somewhere else where he could shoot at the deputies,” he said.

After entering the home, the male suspect was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a press release from the sheriff.

He was later identified as a 27 year old from Springfield.

Because the man died from suicide, his name and other details are being withheld by the Sheriff’s Office out of respect for the family.

The female victim is reportedly safe after the events.
