One of the new office holders in Galena this year isn’t so new to the office at all. Matt Daugherty was appointed to the position of Stone County Assessor by Gov. Parson after going through a selection process headed up by the Stone County Republican Central Committee. Daugherty has been in the Assessor’s office for the last six years, including serving last year as Deputy Assessor.

Daugherty was born in Kansas City before moving to Cape Fair as a child. “I spent most of my childhood in Cape Fair,” he said. Later on, his family moved to Arizona. In 2003, Daugherty came back to the area. It was around that time he met his wife, Jackie.

When looking at the new job of assessor, Daugherty said he planned, at least for the time being, to continue on as previous assessor Brad Hudson had. “I just want to continue to serve the people of Stone County and continue working on improvements we already had started,” he said.

Some of the improvements underway include expanding the accessiblity of online assessment, including opening up that process to businesses.

During Hudson’s term, the Assessor’s office was able to return a portion of their budget each year to the county. “When we do that, it’s called a give back. I will continue to run the office with a conservative and balanced budget to continue doing that,” he said.

Another big item coming up for the Stone County Assessor’s office is a new overhead for the GIS system. “We do a new [overhead] every four to five years, and that is coming due,” Daugherty said. “It’s a big ticket item.” When those overhead photographs of the county, taken from aircraft, are undertaken, Stone County is usually able to partner with tthe Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the cost for taxpayers of Stone County. “Usually, as I understand, they pay for half,” Daugherty said.

Daugherty said he planned to seek reelection after his appointed term concludes in 2020. “I want to keep doing the job and working for the people of Stone County,” he said.

Daugherty lives in Galena with his wife, Jackie, and their eight and a half year old son, Jase.
