Individuals who participate in the curbside recycling program in the City of Crane may receive a letter in the coming weeks about the future of that program.
At the Board of Aldermen meeting on Monday, June 25, Mayor Collin Brannan told the board about changes to the program coming from the city’s refuse service provider, Republic Services. This information came to light as the city has been discussing a contract renewal for trash service, as the current contract will expire at the end of July. The Board has expressed its desire to remain with Republic under as close to the same contract as possible.
“When we first started offering curbside recycling,” Mayor Brannan said, “the recycling company was paying the trash service something like $5 per ton of recycling. However, that has changed and now Republic is having to pay them $45 per ton to take the recycling. So, now the question is whether to continue to offer the service at a slight premium, maybe $2 or $3 per month to those that use it, or to end the service. I’d hate to charge people to recycle, but the economics have changed.
“The city does have the recycling center that is open every Saturday,” he said.
Brannan told the board that he was having his contact with the refuse service provider gather the numbers on what the increased cost may be. “I told him, maybe a joint letter from both of us to those that utilize the service would be a good idea. Ask them whether they would prefer to pay for the service, or do away with it and utilize the recycling center we have in town.”
No decision has yet been reached by the city or the trash service provider. The current contract is set to expire July 31, 2018.
