City of Crane Approves 2017-2018 Budget

February 1, 2018
Isaac Estes-Jones

The City of Crane passed the 2017-2018 budget at the January 22 meeting of the City Council.
“It’s late,” said Crane Mayor Collin Brannan. When asked about the delay, Brannan said, “We just couldn’t get all of the numbers together in time. That’s not an excuse, per say, but it’s just what happened.”
Now that the budget has been approved by the Board of Aldermen, the City has a clearer roadmap looking toward spending for the remainder of the fiscal year ending this summer. “In my view,” said Brannan, “A budget is a guide. It shouldn’t be treated as, ‘Well, we have this budgeted, we have to spend it before the end of the year,’ type of thing. We are responsible to the taxpayers of the city. We have to do what is right for the people.”
Highlights from the budget include a CLE Block Grant coming in worth $10,000. “We were awarded a grant that is administered by the Department of Public Safety. This is for the replacement of a patrol car,” Brannan said. “We have not purchased the vehicle yet, but this $10,000 will be used to offset the purchase price.”
Perusing the budget also brought up the $3,000 allocated for finishing the fire station. “We are trying to finish up the offices and classroom down there,” the mayor said.
On the income side of things, the city projects sales taxes to be up slightly, to $130,000, up from 2017’s $124,251, but still below 2016’s $137,183.
The complete budget is available from City Hall.
