Crane Man Charged After Mail Theft, Hit And Run

March 12, 2020
Isaac Estes-Jones

An 18 year old Crane man is being held in the Stone County Jail on charges of stealing and fleeing the scene of a crash, one involving drugs. According to affidavits of probable cause, Grant Chambers is accused of taking mail from an address on State Highway CC east of Crane on March 4.

According to the report, the victim gave officers the description of a blue Buick LeSabre and was able to positively identify Chambers as the person who took an Amazon package from the property. The package contained headlights for the victim’s vehicle. Another individual was reportedly in the LeSabre with Chambers, but the victim could not identify them. Chambers is charged with two misdemeanor counts of stealing less than $150.

Also on March 4, Chambers allegedly crashed the same vehicle into another somewhere in Crane. According to a statement of probable cause filed by Chief John Elmore, the Buick hit another vehicle from behind then left the scene. The victim in that crash told officers the car that hit hers was a blue Buick with a license plate containing the letter ‘X.’ A witness to this crash took a picture of the driver after following the car when it fled the scene. The driver was reportedly later identified as Chambers. The damage to the other vehicle is estimated at over $1,000. Chambers is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage over $1,000, a Class E Felony.

Finally, Chambers faces charges of delivery of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child involving drugs. Detective Duren, with the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, was told Chambers’ vehicle was broken down hear Elsey.

When he arrived on scene, Chambers and the other person in the vehicle were detained. Chambers was arrested on stealing charges. The second person was identified as a 15 year old male. The teenager was taken to the hospital for medical and drug tests, based on his condition when intercepted. He had allegedly taken Xanax earlier in the day, Xanax he got from Chambers. The teen’s mother was reportedly afraid for his wellbeing and could not understand the teen when she spoke with him due to his intoxication.

Delivery of a controlled substance is a Class C felony, while endangering the welfare of a child involving drugs is a Class D felony. For these two charges, Chambers bond was set at $25,000, according to online court records. His bond for leaving the scene of an accident was set at $15,000, for a total bond of $40,000 cash or surety. According to court records, no bond was set for the stealing charges and Chambers was simply served a summons to appear on the charges.

Chambers is scheduled to next appear in Stone County Courts on these charges on March 24.
