Anyone with a Keurig coffee maker is encouraged to bring your used k-cup coffee pods to the Crane branch of the Stone County Library for recycling.
Julie Bryce, library associate at the Crane branch, says recycling has been a passion of hers for a long time. “I am a huge recycler,” she says. “I have been on various brigades over the years and am currently collecting dental hygiene items and razors and associated items at the library, along with the k-cups.”
Bryce partners with a business called TerraCycle. TerraCycle is headquartered in New Jersey and works to eliminate waste through various partnerships and campaigns.
TerraCycle worked with Subaru on the k-cup campaign. TerraCycle shipped receptacles to various Subaru dealerships and when they are full, they will be shipped to New Jersey for processing. “The Galena and Crane libraries both have a Keurig. When I learned about the Subaru program, I collected our k-cups and took them down to the Subaru dealership in Springfield,” said Bryce.
The company will compost the used coffee grounds in the k-cups and recycle the plastic.
Bryce was not sure how long the k-cup campaign would last, but plans to make at least one more trip to drop off k-cups at the dealership in Springfield.
With the dental items and razors, Bryce says, “The way the program works is I collect all the items. Then when I need to ship them, I download a free mailing label and ship to New Jersey. Partner brands pay the shipping.”
