Crane Anchor School making a difference
Crane R-III began its alternative school, named the Anchor School, for grades 7-12 in the 2016-17 school year. For a school our size, it is unusual to have its own program of this kind, but teachers and administrators saw a need for students that we were losing as they dropped out of school. This program’s success has been AMAZING, which I totally contribute to our Director, Mike Morelock, and para, Stacey Bailie. Not only does the program work on credits students need to graduate, but also soft skills needed to go into the workforce.
They also served the community by opening the Anchor Store that provided clothes for free to families in need. In 2019-20 we added a MO Options program that has met several students’ needs.
In the five years, we have had this program to date, we have served 65 total students through our Anchor School and MO Options program. Of those 65 students, at the end of this year, 34 will have graduated from high school. Most, if not all, of those students, would have become dropouts. Several had dropped out and returned to our MO Options program to earn their diploma. Seventeen of the 65 transferred to another district or homeschool, two have gone back to the regular education classes, and 12 will still be in the program next year.
Out of the 65 students served 0, I repeat ZERO, have dropped out of school!
This is just one of the many ways our rural district has served our students and community. Crane R-III is proud of this program, its staff, and its students!
