City Of Galena Sets General Penalty Ordinance For Violations

August 9, 2018
Isaac Estes-Jones
In late May of this year, the City of Galena enacted an ordinance that sets a general penalty for violation of any other city ordinance that did not previously include a penalty.
The bill sets the maximum penalty for any City of Galena ordinance violation at $500 or 90 days in jail, unless specified in another City ordinance or by state law.
Galena City Council held first, second and final readings of the bill on Tuesday, May 22, with Council member John Arrington acting as Mayor Pro Tem after Mayor John Coones had to leave the meeting early.
The measure passed with unanimous council support and became effective immediately upon approval by the mayor.
The full text of the ordinance, 2018-4 (Setting Forth A General Penalty Ordinance For All Ordinance Violations That Are Not Set) follows.
“An Ordinance Setting Forth A General Penalty Ordinance For All Ordinance Violations That Are Not Set Forth In Any Ordinance In the City Of Galena, Missouri
“Be it ordained by the Board of Aldermen of the City of Galena, Missouri, as follows:
“Section 1 - Any person that violates an Ordinance that does not set forth a penalty shall be penalized by a fine of up to $500.00 or 90 days in jail, or by both a fine and confinement; or up to the maximum fine and confinement as allowed by state law as a punishment for the Ordinance that has been violated
“Section 2 - This ordinance shall become in full force and immediately upon its passage by the Board of Aldermen and approved by the Mayor
“/s John Coones, Mayor, City of Galena”
