Last week, Stone County Clerk Cindy Elmore announced her resignation effective July 31, 2021. Elmore cited moving out of the county to run a family business and taking care of family health issues as the reason behind her departure from office. Elmore was elected as county clerk in 2014, taking office on January 1, 2015. She served as chief deputy county clerk for seven years before that.

On the Stone County clerk’s website, Elmore stated, “It has been a pleasure to work in the county clerk’s office for over 14 years and an honor to serve as your county clerk for the last seven.”

Governor Parson will now be tasked with appointing someone to fill Elmore’s seat until the end of the current term. The current Chief Deputy County Clerk, Jeri Row, lives out of county and is not eligible for appointment. Tena Foster, the records clerk in the county clerk’s office, has applied for appointment, and Elmore has given her recommendation to the governor.

Denise Dickens, the administrative assistant to the county commission and former deputy county clerk, has announced that she has also applied for the appointment with plans to run for office in 2022.

Elmore’s husband, John Elmore, resigned as Crane Chief of Police in September 2020.
